Baroque Violin in Paris – April 14th @ 3 PM

In the early decades of the 18th century, Parisian violinist-composers could be roughly grouped into fraternities, creating a melting pot of compositional styles and intentions. Close to the King were the musicians of the 24 violons du Roi who often handed their jobs down from father to son. There were also popular Italian immigrants like Mascitti and Piani, and a third group of composers centered around Philidor and the Concert spirituel. Other musicians, such as Jean-Marie Leclair, were not associated with any of these groups. Our program will highlight the differences and similarities we find in the accompanied violin literature of this era. The result will be a widely diverging afternoon of music that defies any attempt at defining a singular “French baroque style!”
